چکیده

The introduction of airbags into automobiles has significantly improved the safety of the occupants. Unfortunately, airbags can also cause fatal injuries if the occupant is a child smaller (in weight) than a typical 6 year old. In response to this, The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration (NHTSA) has mandated that starting in the 2006 model year all automobiles be equipped with an automatic suppression system to detect the presence of a child or infant and suppress the airbag. The classification problem we address is a four-class problem with the classes being rear-facing infant seat, child, adult, and empty seat. We describe a machine vision-based occupant classification system using a single greyscale camera and a digital signal processor that can perform this function in ”real time” (< 5 seconds). The system has been extensively tested on a database of over 21,000 real-world images collected over a period of 4 months in moderate lighting conditions with a wide variety of passengers in eight different vehicles. We have achieved a classification accuracy of ~95%. . We believe this system serves the need for a low-cost, high reliability embedded real-time airbag suppression system. Additional testing and improvements of the classification system are currently

Integrated segmentation and classification for automotive airbag suppression

The use of airbags into automobiles has significantly improved the safety of the occupants. Abdominal injury with airbag deployment for belted drivers in frontal crashes - biomed 2009.

The risk of moderate or serious abdominal injury is higher for belted drivers in frontal crashes with a deployed airbag than for belted drivers not exposed to a deployed airbag. An analysis of roughly 13,000 belted front seat occupants in frontal crashes from National Automotive Sampling System / Crashworthiness Data System (NASS/CDS) case years 1993-2007 with and without airbag deployment were...

Decision Algorithm for Smart Airbag Deployment Safety Issues

Airbag deployment has been known to be responsible for huge death, incidental injuries and broken bones due to low crash severity and wrong deployment decisions. Therefore, the authorities and industries have been looking for more innovative and intelligent products to be realized for future enhancements in the vehicle safety systems (VSSs). Although the VSSs technologies have advanced consider...

The effects of airbags and seatbelts on occupant injury in longitudinal barrier crashes.

INTRODUCTION Longitudinal barriers, such as guardrails, are designed to prevent a vehicle that leaves the roadway from impacting a more dangerous object while minimizing the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants. Current full-scale test procedures for these devices do not consider the effect of occupant restraints such as seatbelts and airbags. The purpose of this study was to determine the e...

Cost-Based Feature Transfer for Vehicle Occupant Classification

Knowledge of human presence and interaction in a vehicle is of growing interest to vehicle manufacturers for design and safety purposes. We present a framework to perform the tasks of occupant detection and occupant classification for automatic child locks and airbag suppression. It operates for all passenger seats, using a single overhead camera. A transfer learning technique is introduced to ...
